NASA recently conducted a successful flight test with their new shape-changing aircraft flaps.  The difference between these shape-changing flaps, developed by FlexSys, Inc., and flaps currently used on airplanes is that the new ones do not contain any gaps.  This difference has improved aerodynamic efficiency and will also reduce the amount of noise during takeoff and landing.  They call the airfoil system FlexFoil.  Watch the video below to see how FlexFoil works.
