Iron-oxide minerals were found on Mars by NASA’s Curiosity. The minerals mapped from orbit was a big accomplishment for this mission. Curiosity was able to obtain a sample by drilling into Confidence Hills. Now, scientists can test the sample to confirm hypotheses they have been waiting to test. The sample contained some hematite which normally forms in places where water has been present for a long period of time. The sample also contained oxidation levels which shows that it could have provided a chemical energy source for life on Mars.
