NASA’s Curiosity rover has drilled into the surface of Mars twice in the past and is now being prepared to do so again. Their hope is that by drilling into the environment, they will be able to gather information about what Mars was like when the sandstone was laid down. Hardness testing is a crucial part in providing information about the environment. By looking at the hardness levels of rocks, a person can determine how landscapes are shaped. Softer areas will erode much faster than harder areas. Since researchers are trying to find out more about the development process of sandstone, hardness of rocks will be very important information.
