Through the use of hardness testers, you can perform a Rockwell test to see whether or not a material is suitable for a particular construction or engineering project.

There are several methods that can be used to measure hardness, but the Rockwell test is the most commonly used and the easiest to perform. It can be used on nearly all metals, except for ones that would produce indentations too large for commercial use.

The Rockwell method is composed of several steps. Using Rockwell hardness testers, you must place a preliminary force on the material, which can be achieved with a diamond indenter. This force represents the reference position that breaks through the surface to reduce the effects of surface finish. Once you are finished applying the preliminary force, you must place a greater force on the material, which is called a major load. You hold this force in place for a small amount of time before removing it and measuring the depth of the indentation. This measurement is then converted to a number on the hardness scale.

There are 30 different scales that can be used for the Rockwell method, but many commonly used materials are covered under the same scale, including steel, brass, and an assortment of other metals. By using the Rockwell method, engineers or construction workers are able to decide whether a particular metal will be durable enough for commercial use.

Hardness testers can easily perform the Rockwell method and determine the hardness of a particular material. Though some testers are unwieldy in size, there are many portable models available to you as well. Testers are also equipped with several other features, including high accuracy and versatility. They are immensely useful tools for a variety of construction and engineering projects.
