Nicholas Kotov, study leader at the University of Michigan, and scientists have figured out how to create plastic that is as strong as steel. They have done so by mimicking structures found in seashells. They created a process similar to that of the development of a pearl. Their process and the way they are able to make the plastic so strong is by building materials one nanoscale layer at a time. They built a specific machine for this process. Developers are hoping to have their new product available in the near future.
