K. Chiu offers a few tips about how to determine if jade is real and one of them involves performing a scratch test.  A scratch test determines that hardness of a mineral.  Jade is a very hard material.  In fact, Jade is a lot harder than steel.  Jade has a hardness of between 6 and 7 on Mohs hardness scale.  Steel, on the other hand, has a hardness of 5.  In order to test the hardness of jade, you can scratch the material with a knife or needle.  If you are able to scratch it, then the jade is fake.
