Steel is the most used metal on Earth. It’s many different forms, low production costs, and strength allows it to be used for many different applications. The five main applications of steel are construction, transport, energy, packaging, and appliances. Steel is used frequently in construction because of its sustainability and low costs. It is used to create buildings, tunnels, harbors, and more. When used for transportation, it is designed to have specific levels of elasticity, strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. Steel makes up a large part of cars, ships, and jet engines. Energy applications of steel include oil and gas wells, pipelines, wind turbines, transmission towers, and more. The benefits of using it for packaging are protection from water damage, air and light exposure, and ability to recycle after use. Usually, about 75% of a household appliance is made from steel. It’s many applications makes steel a desirable metal.
